The Persistence of Memory – Salvador Dalí’s enigmatic painting where time unravels and reclaims its autonomy from logic and the rigid measurement instruments created by humans. A painting where time becomes a diversion, slipping through fingers like water. Fluid. Uncontainable. Wild. Much like nature itself.

Copy Kitty is a concept that likewise bends time. It is the act of looking back at art frozen in the past and playfully reinterpreting it in the present. It fuses the 2000s (when the digital world was just beginning to take root in us) with the present (in which the digital has become an extension of who we are). Copy Kitty is the past brought back into the present – the digital artefact of Microsoft Paint, a cultural code shared by an entire generation of millennials.

Today, Copy Kitty is back at it, wrestling with time once more, presenting a 2025 version of her replica of The Persistence of Memory, which she first recreated in 2021. Now, as she remakes the copy in its 2025 version, she ponders: Why did Copy Kitty start copying in the first place?

A need to turn art into fleeting content on social media?

A need to shape time the way it constantly shapes us?

A need to colour life in digital pixels?

The most insightful answers will likely come from her viewers who, together with her, look back at art – and its meaning in the world.

Copy Kitty is a cultural recycler drawing in MSPaint. She is challenging the visual overload of our digital era with shameless reinterpretations using nostalgic lo-fi tools. CopyKitty.png is playful, raw and forever free from the pressures of originality. Her first solo show, Save as copykitty.png, was held at Celula de Artă / Carol 53 (Bucharest).
